I’ve shared before that I have a wonderful little book that my husband bought for me a few years ago. He has his own copy; it was his mother’s. The book, “The Practice of Religion,” is filled with prayers, hymns, daily readings, etc. My edition was published in 1950; I do believe the first printing of the book goes back even earlier.
I love the ancient text that it uses; there are many “Thees and Thous” which I find comforting. I know I’m in the minority in that way, but that’s ok.
This morning, I read a hymn from the book that I felt was just perfect for today. They place the hymns after each prayer office. For instance, this hymn follows Morning Prayer. As I read it, I felt it appropriate as we continue our journey through Holy Week.
New every morning is the love
Our waking and uprising prove;
Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life and power and thought.
New mercies each returning day
Hover around us while we pray;
New perils past, new sins forgiven,
New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven.
If, on our daily course, our mind
Be set to hallow all we find,
New treasures still of countless price
God will provide for sacrifice.
Old friends, old scenes will lovelier be
As more of heaven in each we see;
Some softening gleam of love and prayer
Shall dawn on every cross and care.
The trivial round, the common task
Will furnish all we need to ask;
Room to deny ourselves, a road
To bring us daily nearer God.
Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love,
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.
Have a wonderful day, everyone. Spend time with Jesus today, remember His sacrifice, never taking it for granted.
Matthew 27:54
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this man was the Son of God”.
