A Darkness Fell

Today is the most solemn day of the year. The day, when so long ago, a darkness fell. I don’t think there is ever a time when I read the account of the crucifixion, regardless of which gospel it is, that I don’t tear up.

It’s hard to imagine people treating another human being the way Jesus was treated. The mocking and physical torture He endured. That alone is emotional to think about. Then…the physical crucifixion and Him giving His life for me, there are no words.

Today, we remember the sacrifice and the gift. Today, of all days, is a day to devote ourselves to our Lord who gave everything for us.

Friends, today, make a point to stop at noon, the time He was nailed to the cross. Pause again at 3:00 p.m. as He said, “It is finished.”

John 19:25-30
Therefore, the soldiers did these things. But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your Son!”

Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your Mother!” From that hour, the disciple took her into his own household.

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, “I am thirsty”.

A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

Therefore, when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
