I remember when I was a kid, many of the stores in town were closed on Sundays. Sunday was a day when families went to church, and would gather for dinner with the grandparents. Sundays were slower, they had a different feel to them.
Things have changed along the way. You can buy liquor now before noon on Sunday, just because the big game starts at noon. Kids’ softball games are not played on Saturday they span the entire weekend. Many people find Sunday as the day to go into the office because, “I can get more things accomplished when no one is there”, present company included here!
Our Lord created Heaven and Earth in six days. What did he do on the seventh…He Rested… But he did more than rest. “God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation”. (Genesis 2:1-3)
I’ve made a conscious effort recently to get back to resting on Sundays. After church, I find time to enjoy God’s creation. Spending time with a fishing pole, sitting by the water, or enjoying the outdoors in general. During that time I talk with Father and I do a lot of listening. I’ve found some of my most peaceful days have been these recent Sundays when I’ve made time to just sit, rest and enjoy time with God.
Working on our relationship with God shouldn’t be pushed to just Sundays, that’s not what I’m saying. Building this relationship should be part of our everyday lives. However, Sundays, in my opinion, should be a day when we truly stop and build in time to rest and be with Father. A time to really say thank you for his gift of creation, and for his love of his children.
So I encourage you today, don’t go into the office, don’t sit in front of that ball game on tv, don’t scamper to complete that list of errands. Instead, enjoy some quality time with God. Go to a park, maybe sit by a lake, or just enjoy time in the backyard. Wherever you are, talk with God and build that relationship he’s asking for. Just start talking, and make sure to take time to listen.
