I’m sure you have probably heard about the devastating floods recently in Missouri and Kentucky. It’s been heartbreaking to see the loss of homes and lives. I’ve been following this close-up through the eyes of some pretty amazing people. These individuals are just like you and me. Simple people who go to work, raise their kids and love God. However, they are truly more than that, they are doing God’s work.
The Marco Patriots formed back in September of 2017 just as Hurricane Irma headed into SW Florida. As the category 4 storm caused major damage, a group of citizens in the Marco Island area banded together to help the community stay safe, and provide communications. The nation responded with assistance in the form of supplies and funding to help this group of citizens, help the community get back on its feet. In early 2018 the Marco Patriots were granted non-profit status and has since grown in volunteers and mission. The group’s mission is simple; “Marco Patriots is a humanitarian organization led by volunteers who are committed to providing relief to victims of disasters large and small and helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and calamities in life”.
I’ve watched as this group of volunteers has helped other communities, just as the nation helped Marco after Irma. They’ve traveled up and down the country to lend support where they can, asking nothing in return. This weekend they were in Kentucky to bring supplies, locate and distribute water and cook meals for Americans who have lost everything.
Father wants his children to help each other, to love one another, to give of themselves where they can. There are little things that can make a difference. Write a note to a friend going through a difficult time. Weeding a flower garden for a neighbor who is ill. Provide a meal for a young family trying to juggle life. Simple things that may not seem like much, but can make a difference.
If we all give thought to how we can help each other, little by little this help and love spreads. And…before we know it, this helping of each other becomes the norm.
Thank you to the Marco Patriots, and to all volunteers out there who give of themselves every day just to help make someone’s life better.
John 13:34
I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
