The Oldies Station

Yesterday afternoon my husband helped me pack up some boxes to ship to our event. We taped and packed and weighed and measured, and dropped everything at the UPS shop up the street. On the way home I made the observation that it was 5 o’clock somewhere!

We headed home and made our way to a libation, chatted for a bit about things, and began to discuss what was for dinner. Once the decision was made and we began the preparation, I started some music. Our go-to is Sinatra when we’re enjoying a libation and cooking together. As the tunes played we got those happy feet. Do you know what I mean, a song comes on, and the next thing you know your feet are moving around the kitchen πŸ™‚

Well, this got me thinking about when our kids were little. On Saturday nights we would all be in the kitchen cooking dinner together. Our kids were like 12 and 4 and they loved the oldies. I mean like the ’50’s’ and 60’s oldies. There was an oldies station, K104, in our town that, every Saturday night had a call-in request show. It soon became our regular Saturday evening routine. We made dinner, during which, the kids called the oldies station and requested some of the favorites they had come to love, yes even at 12 and 4 πŸ™‚ To this day I smile when I hear “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”.

I guess my point to this little blog today is to let your hair down and have some fun. While you’re at it, make some memories. here we are almost 30 years later and I have VIVID memories of those nights when our kids were little. And…our kids have those same memories. I will occasionally text them and ask what their favorite oldies song is. Ya, it doesn’t take long for them to reply “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. They remember, and they remember fondly.

Our family isn’t perfect, no family is. But, our family is bound by love and some incredible memories and we are there for each other no matter what comes.

Father was with us back then as he is today. Back then he was helping us to teach our children not only about his love but about fun and togetherness. He has blessed us with beautiful children and grandchildren.

So take some time this Saturday or maybe this evening and start doing some things that become routine. Start doing things that become a tradition and make a lasting memory you and our family can look back on. And…make sure Father is in the center of it all! He loves watching these moments transpire πŸ™‚

Proverbs 22:6
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Oh in case you need some inspiration this Saturday morning, take a listen πŸ™‚
