Boy doesn’t the title of today’s little blog sound like a great title for a movie? Well, maybe not so much, π . Anyway, just wanted to share a little about a fun event that is happening this weekend. Each year at our church, the second Sunday of December is “cookie Sunday”. Sounds pretty good to me!
This tradition goes back many, many years. The first Saturday of December volunteers meet in the kitchen and make, from scratch, homemade sugar cookie dough. Stations of mixers are set up and pairs work together to make the dough and pass it on to a team to roll it out and cut into shapes. You know, gingerbread men, stars, bells, etc, the usual Christmas cookie shapes. The cookies are placed on large trays, covered and placed in our church fridge to set for the week.
Tomorrow, we will gather back in the kitchen to bake these beauties and separate them into groups of five or six onto individual plates. The plates are then wrapped. Next, we make containers of frosting from scratch, adding the appropriate drops of food coloring to create the reds and greens. Of course there are tons of other decorating goodies, sprinkles, candies, you name it, all the good stuff.
On Sunday morning we’ll set up tables in our great hall, each loaded with frosting containers and goodies. The plates of cookies will be in the center and after our 9:00am service the children, young AND old will head into the to hall to decorate cookies. It’s a wonderful feeling and watching the kids work is so much fun, and some of the creations are pretty impressive.
It’s another time for God’s children, again young and old, to come together. We laugh, encourage, admire and enjoy simple gifts like cookies.
Whatever you have planned for this weekend, I hope you can enjoy some simple gifts. Hey, maybe spend a little time making some of those holiday cookies π . Have a great day my friends, thanks for letting me share a little tradition.
Luke 1:35
And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy – the Son of God.
