Today is the beginning of Lent. The 40-day season, (not counting Sundays) of fasting, repentance and honestly, time to be even closer to Father. As you probably know, Lent is the time when we remember and I would even go so far as to say honor, the period when Jesus was in the wilderness and was tempted by Satan. He was tempted every bit as much as we were but never gave in, he never sinned.
Many people give up something for Lent, chocolate, alcohol, or meat on Friday. Others begin doing something during Lent, perhaps committing to reading the Bible daily, setting aside specific time with God, or adding a worship time at church. Many years ago I used to think it was symbolic, the giving up of something, or the taking on something more spiritual during this time. However, if what you truly give up is something you are pretty attached to, then you will feel the temptation during this time, and you will feel, on a much smaller scale, some of what Jesus felt. The question is, can we stick to it, can we not go back to the vice, not sin, and honor the commitment we make to Father on this day? If we are taking on something new, for instance committing to time with God each morning, can we set aside the interferences that may come, to honor that time?
Lent is a time for reflection, and self-examination, it’s a time to dig even deeper into our relationship with God. It’s a time to try to really understand the path that Jesus walked for us. Yes, my friends, he walked in our shoes, he went through the trials, he was mocked, persecuted, and ultimately killed, for us. Can we honor his sacrifice by strengthening our relationship with Him and Father, by, in a small way, walking his path? I think so.
This morning Father, I make my commitment to you. I ask for your strength and your spirit to guide me through this lenten time. Help me Father to be more one with you so that I may be fully immersed in the glory of your love.
Friends, even if you haven’t participated in the season of Lent, I encourage you to make a commitment to spend more time with Father. He so wants a relationship with us, His children. Oh, and hey, if you are so inclined, go ahead, and give up the chocolate for the next 40 days π .
Have a great day my friends!
Ecclesiastes 3:20
All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return.
