Sundaes and Shakes

One of my first posts in this little blog was about my husband and I enjoying ice cream at one of our local ice cream shops. Well, last night I was the one who made the suggestion to head down to what has become our favorite ice cream shop, “Scoops”. We love this place because of the nostalgia on the walls, the staff is great, and ya, the ice cream is awesome.

You see tons of memories come to mind when we visit Scoops. My husband says they are the only place that has peppermint ice cream like he used to have as a kid. Without fail, he will get the peppermint topped with chocolate sauce 🙂 . Well until last night, when he changed it up a bit for the Heath Bar sundae. Ya, I wasn’t expecting that, but I will admit, the small bite I had, it wasn’t a bad choice.

Anyway, last night our experience at Scoops was much like our other visits. They were packed, inside and out. The line moved quickly as it usually does. But what struck me, and totally made me smile was the number of families together last night. The place was filled with families, kids trying to decide what they wanted, and dad standing at the end of their line asking each one to make up their mind. This one father steps up to the register at the end of his family’s ordering spree and the server asked what he would like. He just smiled and said, “Can I have a chocolate shake?”. The server smiled and said absolutely. Dad smiled and paid the bill.

My husband and I ordered, my usual is pretty simple, chocolate on a waffle cone, and as I said, last night he ordered the Heath Bar sundae. Then the fun begins as the kids from the previous family start getting their creations. There was every flavor and topping combo you could think of, and then of course Dad’s chocolate shake. The kids, oh, and by the way, some of those kids were high school kids, they were laughing and telling stories, it was just simply nice to see.

We headed to a table outside, which again was filled with families. We watched the parade of families and couples come in and make their way through the process. The place was just filled with a good mood and I couldn’t help thinking how Father was smiling. This, this is what we need. More togetherness with family, getting back to simple things like enjoying ice cream on a summer evening. Did I also mention, as I looked around at those families, they weren’t all on their cell phones with heads down? No, to be honest, I didn’t see a phone, everyone was talking to each other, laughing, joking, yes, I realize that’s unusual, but it can indeed be done.

Maybe I’m old school, I just feel that what this world needs, what we need as God’s children, is to get back to being family. We need to spend more time talking, sharing, and connecting vs. texting and scrolling through social media feeds. It was so nice to see this happening last night. Let’s make an effort to put down the devices and connect through actual conversation. Hey, I highly recommend a family outing to the local ice cream shop 🙂 .

Have a wonderful day my friends 🙂 .
