Simple Friends

A few days ago in this little blog, I mentioned that we had dinner with some wonderful friends. During that evening we learned so much about each other. We shared how small we felt the world was as we started to talk about friends in our lives.

My husband and I talked about how we knew the father of Todd Beamer, the passenger on the United 93 flight that went down over Shanksville PA on 9/11. Todd is remembered for his last words “Let’s Roll” on that fateful morning as the passengers of that flight decided they would not allow the hijackers to achieve their mission. Yes, Dave Beamer, Todd’s father owned the company where we worked, many, many years ago. Todd was just a little boy back then.

Then we chatted about a friend, a pretty well-known baritone, well ya, you could say pretty popular opera star. However, our friend and his family have chosen to live a simple life in our little central IL community. He, and his pianist wife are internationally known and are so, so talented. But…when they are at home, they are just simply friends. I’ll never forget, when our grandson was going through multiple surgeries early on, we held a fundraiser at our church. Our friend Nathan, the international opera star, was schlepping tables in the rain that day. He looked like Indiana Jones, rather than one of the characters from his recent opera performance.

For some reason, one of Nathan’s earlier songs has been playing in my head the last few days. It’s an awesome song, titled, Just Before the Sunrise. I’m not sure why it keeps playing, but it does, and maybe that is Father asking me to share this gem of a tune. Maybe it’s Father asking me to share that regardless of what we do, who we know, or where we’ve been, we are simply His children. Nathan and his wife Julie are incredibly gifted musicians, however, they are even more gifted in their love of helping others, whether it be students or friends.

We’re blessed, my friends. We are blessed with each other. Let us hold tight to these blessings and know that Father has brought us together to love and strengthen one another.

Have a great day my friends, and may this wonderful tune play in your head for the rest of the day. Thank you Nathan and Julie for sharing your amazing talent and your amazing love with the world.

Philippians 2:13
For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
