Shop and Serve

The title of today’s little blog sounds like the name of a great new eating establishment 🙂 . Actually, though I was thinking this morning about the great day we had yesterday, but in a way I was sad. Let me explain.

My husband and I actually chilled a little yesterday morning. We had a Saturday breakfast at home, (husband cooked), enjoyed coffee as we chatted, and even enjoyed seeing our otter family swimming in the pond outside our place. I putzed around getting little chores accomplished, it was a relaxing morning that was much needed.

We headed out after breakfast to do some Christmas shopping at some local stores. We went to the first area which is filled with little local shops and restaurants. The first thing we noticed was the abundance of parking spaces. We wandered into the first store, found what we needed pretty quickly and then my husband headed back to the car to drop off the bag. We were off to a good start and I’m thinking we are gonna get some things done. As we walked through and went into various shops, we noticed how empty the shops were. I mean empty, hardly anyone was shopping.

We finished our hunt for what we needed, and headed to the next group of shops a few miles away. Again, same scenario, hardly anyone was out. Now mind you it was a gorgeous day, not too hot, not too cold, we’re just a few weeks from Christmas, where was everyone. When I mentioned this to several friends last night, they too noticed the difference. Some commented as well that they do most of their shopping online, it’s just easier. I understand, I truly do, but I still love the old-fashioned shopping in stores. I love to support the local businesses, and I’m sad that things have shifted so.

Last night we helped the Marco Patriots in the annual Christmas Parade. We had a great time and we had so much help decorating, driving, walking, and handing out candy. The snow machine was a hit for sure, and we won the award for best Christmas spirit 🙂 . I realized how much volunteers make this world click. Without them, we wouldn’t get many things accomplished. Special thanks to all who made last night a great success!

Today friends I just ask you to consider a couple of things, shop at your local establishments, stores, restaurants, tree farms, you name it, help the neighbor in your community. Next, spend a little time volunteering. Local hospitals, VAs, schools, humane societies, there are sooo many places that will use volunteers and need the help. This season, let’s give back to our communities where we can show the love of Father locally, together we’ll make our communities stronger.

Have a great day my friends 🙂 .

  1. Good Morning, Kim,  I’ve noticed empty stores too! What a shame as the hustle/bustle of shopping is what makes Christmas  spirit so great.  Inventory is down as are decorations like they used to be! Why go to all the trouble and hiring seasonal help in down times? So sad that our grandchildren won’t enjoy all the hustle, bustle and cheeriness of their community like we enjoyed. AMAZON has taken the joy out of old-fashioned Christmases.  But if you have mailed packages lately, you will soon understand why people no longer wrap and mail packages. Expensive and half-hour lines as post offices are also understaffed.  With the car accident, Nov 10, no car to get out and do all the Christmsd running around, our Christmas this year in OH is totally different. No cards addressed over Thanksgiving, no gifts wrapped and mailed. Next year we will resume our fun of the holidays hopefully as I miss all that. Kids and grandkids get checks🥹🥹. Just not the same.  Jack is waiting until May to replace his vehicle as why buy one now and leave it in the garage five months? We use my car in FL and his in OH.  Merry Christmas and the best to you in 2024. Looking forward to catching up soon.  Hugs, Linda
