The Christmas Card

Last night we stopped by the mailbox on the way into our community. My husband got back in the car and, as usual this time of year we looked at the envelopes and who they were from. Ahh, the daily group of Christmas cards from family and friends. I love opening these and catching up on the latest family photos, and the occasional Christmas letter recapping the year, it’s nice to keep up with everyone across the miles.

I’m guessing we’re like most folks, after we’ve read the cards and admired the pictures, I tape these to the pantry door in our kitchen so they are on full display for everyone to see. As I did this with the cards we received yesterday I noticed something. I noticed that we usually have many more cards on display by this time. It made me pause as I recalled a few conversations with people this last week.

Let me preface this by saying, um, our Christmas cards are going in the mail this morning on the way to work 🙂 . Like many, we usually have this task completed early in the month, (remember our traditions from previous little blogs, ya this is one of ’em). Also like many, I’m not sure where the month has gone. Time has flown by and here we are 5 days from Christmas. I’ve talked with several friends this last week and they have all mentioned specifically, “I haven’t even had time to get our Christmas cards mailed out”.

Friends, what does that say about the craziness of our lives, that we are scrambling to mail our Christmas cards? This simple expression of love and friendship has taken a back seat to other priorities. Or are they really? I get it, I’m right there with ya if you are in this same place. I’m not pointing any fingers, because you know the old saying, when you point a finger, there are three more pointing back at you. It just makes me sad. The Christmas card is a way to reach out during this special time of the year.

Well, friends, late or not, our cards will go in the mail today, and we’ll continue this tradition. I just encourage you to send yours, even if they arrive late. Hey, add a note inside, “Better late than never”. Maybe next year at this time, I’ll devote a little blog to reminding everyone, “It’s Christmas card writing weekend”.

Have a great day friends, and take a moment to look at what is truly important today. Smile at a stranger, say thank you to the coffee barista, call your kids, give thanks to Father for His most precious gift, the Christ Child 🙂 .

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel.

  1. Good morning Kim and Bob,  I always enjoyed doing an annual Christmas letter and cards over the Thanksgiving long weekend, Christmas Carols at the dining room table drowning out ballgames in the den.  This year with our accident on Nov 10 and a week’s vacation in Aruba Nov 27/Dec 4, along with no car (except a two-week rental), this is our “Charlie Brown Ohio Christmas”. We are snug in front of a beautiful tree, mantle, and fireplace and excited to fly back to FL Dec 31. Jack is not getting a new vehicle until he returns in May as it just stays in the garage.  So I’m wishing you and Bob Merry Christmas and the BEST in 2024 with a virtual card and virtual hug❤️.

PS: I’ve heard “Life is like a roll of toilet paper! The closer to the end, the faster it goes”. My answer to that is “No sh#@, Dick Tracy”🤣🤣    Looking forward to a double date dinner in early 2024. Love, Linda and Jack

  2. I too confessed, my lateness in getting out the cards. But my tardiness does not reflect on the wonderful people who will eventually get a Christmas card from me Merry Christmas, my friends
