From Scratch

One day last week I was making pasta for dinner. I did the usual, chopped up the onions, and green peppers, cooked them with the meat, pasta into the boiling water. Then I asked my husband to grab the spaghetti sauce from the pantry. He looked around and then came out saying, “Um I don’t see any spaghetti sauce”. I too looked in the normal location, and elsewhere and he was correct no jar anywhere. Well, now what? I improvised, grabbed the cans of tomato sauce, cut up fresh tomatoes, and added them to the pan along with some additional spices to doctor things up. I asked my husband to give a taste and he said it was ok but a little boring. Hmm, I thought, what do I add next to jazz this up.

I called a friend who is a chef and asked for her opinion. She instantly answered, “Add more garlic and about a tablespoon of brown sugar”. ”Seriously, brown sugar”, I responded. ”Yep, it will add a little complexity to the sauce and pull it all together”. She then told me that it was the secret ingredient to her grandmother’s spaghetti sauce. Ok, in went a little more garlic and the brown sugar. I stirred for a bit and let it all marinate and asked my husband to give it a try. He stopped and confirmed, “Yep, I don’t know how but that did the trick, that’s really good”. It’s funny, it felt very satisfying being able to whip something together from scratch. I don’t usually cook that way, I need a recipe when I do. Thanks to a dear friend, that might change 🙂 .

You know, Father has gifted us with many talents, some of which we may not even know about. I think it’s up to us to dig in and try new things. No matter our age, we can always learn and grow. Sometimes it’s the little things we can do, or like the brown sugar, it’s the simplest ingredients that can make a difference. We need to only believe in ourselves, believe that Father created us for a reason and that He believes in us. There is a lot of good to be done in this world, and we’re here in my opinion to do it.

So friends let’s take some time to try some new things. Me thinks I’ll be doing a little more of the cooking from scratch, (with the help of a friend who knows a little bit about that). What a great opportunity to spend more time together with people you love, and learn new things. Give it some thought, no matter your age, what’s something you’ve been interested in learning or doing but just haven’t gotten around to it. Now’s the time I say.

Have a great day my friends, I’m off to figure out what’s for dinner tonight 🙂 .

Mark 9:23
And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible for one who believes”.
