Cherish the Relationships

I’m spending a few days in the northern part of the state, horse country actually, in Ocala. I’ve mentioned before in this little blog that I’m the executive director of a golf group of 65 and older players. The group is actually celebrating their 60th year as a club. They get together twice a year to golf of course, but to also reconnect as friends. Last night at the opening dinner, it was fun to see everyone gather and catch up since their last meeting in October. I watched as the hugs flowed, as some who had not been at an event in a few years were welcomed back. I watched as new members were welcomed like old friends. We caught up on how the day of golf had gone, and the most important question of the evening, “Did you have fun”, was answered with a resounding yes all around.

During dinner the conversation turned to catching up on family activities, trips planned, recent moves, etc. It truly was a group of old friends gathering together. The relationships that have been nurtured over the years, well you could see them last night.

This is such a special group, they have welcomed me like family and I just love to hear about their lives, what they’ve done, and where they’ve been. Yesterday I golfed with a gentleman who is 85. There is another gentleman in the group turning 89 this year. I can tell you, they don’t look their age and they certainly don’t golf like it! There is an unstated respect within this group. They have an etiquette that is lost in today’s world.

What I’m reminded of as I type this little blog this morning is to cherish the relationships in your life. Whether with your family, with longtime friends, or with new friends you meet, seek to get to know them, truly know them. Father brings people into our lives for a reason and many times we skim right past the opportunity to get to know them better.

As you go about your day today, take the opportunity to get to know someone better. Maybe it’s just a simple question like, “Do you play golf” or “Do you have kids”. A simple question can be the foundation as you build a new friendship. So friends, start being curious and cherish the relationships you have.

Have a great day everyone!

Proverbs 27:9
Oil and perfume make the heart glad, and the sweetness of a friend comes from his earnest counsel.
