Strawberries and Trust

This weekend is our second annual strawberry shortcake event at church to celebrate Pentecost, (the celebration of when the Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles). Last year was our first in making the shortcakes by hand and serving this classic treat during our coffee hours following each service. It was a hit and we’re back at it again this year πŸ™‚ .

I’ll be out of town this weekend and unable to oversee the kitchen crew on Saturday and the serving teams on Sunday. I’ve been a little stressed about this, (I’m just a little “type A” when it comes to events). Two of my good friends at church, who I work with in the kitchen regularly had signed up to help with the preparation on Saturday. Soooo, I reached out to them to ask if they would be ok taking the lead this weekend in my absence. As I suspected, they both agreed without hesitation.

We agreed to meet yesterday when they were both at the church for their weekly Mahjong game. I had prepared a simple list of tasks, printed pictures from last year’s event, and had most everything ready to go, (with the exception of strawberries, they are coming today). Anyway, you get the idea, (refer to “type A comment above). We walked through the kitchen, reviewed the list and the prep work, the setup for the receptions, the list of volunteers signed up to help, etc. As usual, they both said, “No worries, we got this”. I know they do have it, and I left feeling so thankful and relieved for the help this weekend.

As I think about our time yesterday, I realize that turning things over to these friends, and the team of volunteers, well it’s really about trust. I had to be willing to put my trust in them to handle a project that, though not difficult, does require some prep and management. They may not do things the way I would, but that’s totally fine. At the end of the day, I know that however they do things, it will be a successful event with fellowship and some great treats.

I also realize that this situation is much like our relationship with Father. We have to be willing to trust in Him to get through this life. There are many times when He handles things in ways that we probably wouldn’t, but this life is about His plan not ours. I find when I turn things over to God and trust in His plan, things do seem to go a little smoother in this life. I feel that same thankfulness and relief that I felt yesterday with my friends. I feel Father saying, “No worries, we got this”, and I know without a doubt He does.

So this morning, I give thanks for special friends, and volunteers, oh and strawberry shortcake πŸ™‚ . Have a great day friends!

Psalm 37:5
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act.
