You know, I’ve never delved into why we call it Valentine’s Day. I just assumed it was a day set aside to show the one you love, well, that you love ’em. But…where did it come from? So I did a little digging this morning, only to find that it’s kind of fuzzy for sure. Humor me just for a moment as we do a little history lesson. Trust me, it’s short. There really isn’t much actually known about Saint Valentine.
There are actually two St. Valentines in history—one a Roman Priest, the other The Bishop of Terni. There are many similarities between the two and depending on where you do your research, several historians believe they are the same person. At any rate, from what I gather, St Valentine is associated with love because it is believed he defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from being made to serve in war. There is one other legend that while in prison, (for marrying those couples), he signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness. Eventually, he was martyred on February 14, hence why Valentine’s Day is recognized on this date. See, not much info, and pretty short 🙂 .
Oh well, it is Valentine’s Day and I thought a good day for a prayer for love ❤ . I found this one while doing my research this morning and thought it perfect for today.
Dear Lord, on this day of love and affection, we come before you with grateful hearts. Thank you for the gift of love that you have bestowed upon us, both in our relationships with others and in our relationship with you. Help us to cherish and nurture the love we share with our partners, family, and friends, always seeking to reflect your love in our words and actions.
Lord, we lift up to you all those who are lonely or hurting on this day, asking that you would surround them with your comfort and peace. Help us to be instruments of your love, reaching out to those in need and sharing the love that you have poured into our hearts.
Finally, Lord, we thank you for the ultimate expression of your love—the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. May we always remember the depth of your love for us and live our lives in gratitude and obedience to you.
In Jesus name, we pray, Amen.
Have a wonderful day my friends, may it be filled with love and joy, oh, and maybe chocolate! Please continue to lift prayers for sweet Emily Rea’s return.
1 Corinthians 16:14
Let all that you do be done in love.
