A friend of mine posted something on social media yesterday that caught my attention. I have to admit, I don’t go there much. I post this little blog each morning, wish friends happy birthdays, and pop in later in the evening, usually looking for sunset pictures 🙂 . However, yesterday, her post made me stop and read, and what I read was so common sense, straight-up true, that I wanted to share it here.
The post highlighted ten moments when it is best to just be silent. I have to admit, with all that is going on in this crazy world, I think it would be good if everyone read, digested, and followed the advice in this post, present company included!
Here are the ten moments it’s best to just be silent:
- Be Silent if you don’t know the full story.
- Be silent if you feel unable to control your emotions.
- Be silent in the heat of anger.
- Be silent if your words can destroy an amazing friendship or relationship.
- Be silent if your are unsure about the topic or lack of knowledge.
- Be silent when someone is sharing their struggles and vulnerability.
- Be silent if you can’t talk without yelling.
- Be silent if your silence can save your bonds.
- Be silent if speaking will only serve to boost your ego or seek validation.
- Be silent if your words can betray someone’s trust.
Yes, good advice indeed. As I typed these, I thought of many times in my life when I didn’t keep silent during just about each one of these scenarios. I’m not happy about those times as I think about them, and spending a little time with Father to ask for forgiveness would be a good thing.
Friends, it’s so easy to fire off a response when we are emotional. It’s easy to want to chime into a conversation that we know nothing about. It’s easy to sit behind a keyboard on social media and jump into a heated discussion that is only fueling hurt and pain. In reality what we should do is be silent, do research, understand the issue, get the full story, and not jump to conclusions. Step back, breathe, pray, and look for guidance.
I think this list needs a number 11 added to it: Be silent and trust in the Lord. Father will guide us in this thing called life if we only let him.
You know, there is another simple list of ten things to follow…it was a list given by God to Moses. If we follow that list, things are pretty simple too 🙂 .
Have a good day friends!
Exodus 14:14
The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.
