The final days of Jesus’ life, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, the most solemn days of our Christian life.
Today, we begin that final walk, the journey to the Cross—the Triduum, the three final days of Jesus’ life. The Maundy Thursday service has always been meaningful to me.
During this service, we will also participate in the washing of feet. Each of us has the opportunity to take part in this solemn part of the service which signifies our role as servants. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and asked them to do likewise, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”, (John 13:34)
Following the washing of feet we will re-live the breaking of bread at the last supper. The meal where Jesus asks His disciples to eat and drink, “In remembrance of me”. Following communion we will strip the Altar bare, and the “altar of repose” will remain.
The service ends and our prayer watch begins. Parishioners participate by signing up in one-hour intervals to pray and meditate in the light of the sacrament. Jesus asked His disciples, “Could you not watch with me one hour?”. Our prayer watch goes through the night until Good Friday morning.
Today friends, please make time to remember the path of the next three days. Even knowing how it must end, Jesus walked this path in grace and strength, willingly giving His life for us. Let us spend time today in silence and pray with Him. “Could you not watch with me one hour?”. What will be our reply?
Mark 14:22
And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”
