The Cookie Bakers

Our team has a meeting every Tuesday morning. This past Tuesday we were all pretty whooped from Holy Week and Easter as you can probably imagine. The meeting had a different feel to it, we weren’t focused on the week ahead, checking things off our to-do lists, making sure we had this ready or that taken care of. No, this meeting was about celebrating the memories of Holy Week. We all began to share our favorite memories and experiences over the past days, and there were many.

We talked about the amazing volunteers who stepped up to help, the sunrise at the 6:30 a.m. service and its beauty, the smiles and laughter on the kids’ faces as they hunted for eggs and played other games, the beautiful flowers everywhere, and most importantly, the presence of Jesus in every way. We felt him through the entire passion that we commemorated through the Triduum. Alleluia, He is Risen!

As we began to make our way through our weekly agenda, a knock came on the conference room door.  In walked several of our parishioners, members of the Daughters of the King.  They were carrying a basket and two trays. As we said our good mornings to all, they came in and wanted to say thank you to the staff and clergy for all the hard work to make Easter so special.  The trays were filled with various varieties of homemade cookies 🙂 . In the basket, individual bags of the same, decorated beautifully and tied with ribbons. One bag for each of us to take home. Oh my goodness we were all so touched. They were so thoughtful. We took pictures, gave hugs, and expressed our sincere thanks for such a gift of love, oh and yes began to enjoy the scrumptious treats.

It seems so simple, making cookies for someone.  However, that simple gift of taking time to make something by hand, to put your energy and love into it, well it is priceless in my opinion.  The act of thinking of someone, or a group of someones enough to do something special for them, well, that is what Father asks us to do every day.  We may think that what we’re doing is no big deal, isn’t that the point though.  We should be treating others in such a way that, well it’s the norm, it isn’t a big deal.

There are simple acts that we can perform, the making of cookies, holding the door for a stranger, offering to let someone go ahead of you in line, simple things that can show the love of Jesus in subtle yet meaningful ways. Today friends, let’s look for those ways, and then act upon them 🙂 .

Have a wonderful Saturday and hey, maybe pull out that old family recipe and make a batch of cookies!  Thanks as always for your support and being here to read my ramblings. I ask for your continued prayers for sweet Emily Rea’s return.

John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
