The Atlas

We were fortunate to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with family up north. It was wonderful to be together, catching up on everyone’s happenings, sharing old stories, and just being family. As I’m sure most gatherings were, we got loud and rowdy, ate too much, and had an awesome time. We were even fortunate to run into a few friends while shopping the day before Thanksgiving. The bonus of getting hugs and catching up, if only for a few minutes.

We headed home a little earlier than planned to avoid the 8″ of snow that was forecasted, and did get. It’s been a while since we have driven in the white stuff, and we really didn’t want to navigate it. We decided to take a more southern route home to avoid the traffic in the larger cities. We were guessing the traffic would be heavier due to the holiday.

As we planned the route home, we did what we always do: we Google-mapped it. However, even with the way points added, we still weren’t getting the route we wanted. Sooo…we pulled out the trusty Atlas. Yes, some of us still carry around a book of maps of all the states 🙂 .

My husband looked closely at the state and county roads through Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, and into Florida. Sure enough, he found the route we wanted. Yep, that atlas guided us through to the Florida border without a blip. It was actually kind of nice just driving and watching for the route signs that we needed (you know, paying attention to the signs), not having the map talk to us the entire way.

Yes, the atlas is an older resource providing directions. You know what, it works. It reminds me of another “old” resource that works, the Bible. A book, God’s Word, that is thousands of years old, and it still works today.

Friends, sometimes it’s a good idea to step back and look at those tried and true resources that have lasted over time. They are gifts and things to be appreciated. Yes, I get that technology has helped in many ways, but it has hurt as well, but that is for another blog on another day.

Today, just take a moment to appreciate the gifts and resources from times past. Give thanks for the direction they provide.

Have a great day everyone!
