As I was driving home last night, I noticed what I thought were weird clouds in the distance. The closer I got to home, the more I realized these weren’t clouds; this was smoke, and like a lot of it.
By the time I got home, the smoke had made its way from the southeast all the way up to us. I jumped online to see if I could find news on what in the world was on fire. It didn’t take long to learn that over 150 acres of the Picayune Strand State Forest, about 15 miles from us, were on fire. Think about that, 15 miles from us.
As the evening unfolded, the fire spread quickly, causing evacuations of nearby homes and ranches. Local social media went to work asking for assistance to move horses and livestock, shelters opening for evacuees, people helping people. It’s what we do. By the time I went to bed, the fire had spread to over 1000 acres and was only 15% contained.
This morning, the latest reports are that it has spread to over 1500 acres. The weather today, like the past six months, is no rain in sight. The winds are a factor as well, as it’s been windy here the last few days. So, conditions are not favorable for getting control of this thing.
Friends, this morning, I just ask for your prayers. Prayers for the firefighters who are working nonstop to try to get this fire under control. Prayers for the families who have had to evacuate, that their homes may be saved. Prayers for the livestock that are on the farms in these areas, that they too may be saved. Lift prayers that we, God’s children, continue to come together to help each other in need.
Thank you, as always, for being here and for lifting prayers whenever asked. We need them for sure today.
