There has been a sort of theme for these little blog posts this week. Um, not by my doing. The theme is about how many things, well, most things in this life are out of our control. Fortunately, as I’ve said in those other blog posts, we have Jesus to help us through those times. He is there to help us through the things that we do have in our control as well.
I’ll share a little story from our golf event that I’m attending here in Williamsburg. Each night we have dinner in a different location. Last night we were in the main building where we have breakfast each morning. It was a fun evening, lots of laughter and golf stories. Literally on the golf stories, as that was the contest for the evening, to share your best golf story.
After dinner, the staff was getting ready to bring out a birthday cake I had ordered for one of our oldest members, who is turning 90 next week. Just as they were coming in, the fire alarm sounded. Everyone stopped and looked around. Yep, it was legit. We were told to evacuate the building. “Wow”, I thought to myself, “We didn’t even load the cake up with 90 candles”.
As we were leaving the building, we could indeed smell and see the smoke. Yep, this was the real deal! Out we all went to the front walk to see what was next. Fortunately, one of the staff members had grabbed the birthday cake on her way out. We were able to sing ” Happy Birthday ” and present the cake so he could blow out the candles. That was very special ๐
It didn’t take long for not one, not two, but three firetrucks to appear. Full gear, tapping the fire hydrant, pulling hoses, wow! They told us that, at that point, we needed to leave the area because it was an “active fire scene”. Ok, well that’s a wrap for the evening.
As we got back to our room, my mind was racing. What about breakfast, what about items left in our dinner area, including my husband’s phone, what about check out, as the main registration desk was in that building? OY, ya, I was trying to manage something not in my control. I had to trust the team here on-site that they had a plan. I called my contact to ask a few questions, and yes, their team was already making arrangements should we not be able to get back into the main building. We agreed to keep in touch as she had more information. To say I was a little stressed, ya that would be a bit of an understatement.
Well, I leaned into some serious prayer with Father, first and foremost for the protection of the firefighters and the staff. I asked that the damage be minimal and that the loss of property be the same. I asked for guidance to make the right decisions as we got more info. It’s all I could do, and you know what, prayer is enough.
Fortunately, the damage was contained to a very small area, an office on the second floor of the building. Our plans for today are not impacted at all. Everyone is safe, my husband has his phone again, and all is well. Yes, my stress, well, it was for naught as they say ๐ .
Friends, don’t doubt the power of prayer, don’t try to manage things out of your control, give it all to Jesus, and let Him steer the course. It usually works out best that way!
Oh, by the way, I think we have the best golf story for next time ๐ .
Have a good day, friends. Please continue to lift prayers for the return of sweet Emily Rea.

Cast your burden on theย Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
