My husband and I are early risers during the week. We’ve been that way for many, many years. There is just so much you can accomplish when the rest of the world is still sleeping 🙂 . I have to admit, though, recently I’m realizing that maybe I don’t have to rise quite so early. There are benefits to starting just a tad later in the morning.
Rising as early as we do, I’m usually walking or riding my bike in the dark. Now, in some ways, that’s ok because I don’t have to worry about the unpredictable drivers. It’s usually very peaceful with just a few of the wildlife talking to me as I make my way by. And…as I’ve written about before, I can count the stars in a gorgeous predawn sky.
However, it’s um…dark. Some of the streetlights are out on the main road where I ride. Even with my bike lights, um…dark. When I walk, I carry a flashlight just to make sure I don’t disturb some critter, or something bigger than a critter. Ya, dark. And, our bodies are really not meant for thriving in the dark.
This morning, even though I woke at the usual time, I was a little later getting out the door for my ride. As I talked with Father, I shared with Him how I wasn’t a fan of this riding in the dark, even though it was quality time with Him. As I made my way back around towards home, I looked to the east and noticed the first signs of the sunrise. I smiled and said, “Thank you, Father.”
I rode past the entrance of our community to the club just past us. I made my way to the golf course, where I knew I could see the rays just breaking the horizon beyond some palms. Yep, the Lord didn’t disappoint. Not a full sunrise, just the beginning, and you know what, it was enough. As I looked at the horizon, my perspective changed. I felt awake, ready to begin the day. It’s like my body and mind said, “Hey, look, the sun, time to get moving.”
Friends, our perspective changes, I think, when we live in the light and not the darkness. Think about Jesus on Ascension Day, how brightly He shone, the brightest and whitest light anyone had ever seen. The Lord brings light to the darkest moments of our lives.
So, if you’re going through challenges, not sure where to turn, call on the Lord. Ask Him to bring light to the darkness you feel around you. Let Him fill you with His Love, which by nature is filled with the light of His Holy Spirit.
Have a good day, friends, and hey, wander out and look at that sunrise. Let the rays warm your face and soak up the vitamin D. You’ll be glad you did.
Psalm 143:8
Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
