All Will Be Well

Over the past week, I’ve heard this phrase from different people at different times. Last night we had dinner with some dear friends. Schedules have been crazy, and we just haven’t had the time to get together, so it was wonderful to reconnect.

We were discussing our church project; they, too, are parishioners. We talked about the various things I’ve been working on, the making of lists, thinking through storage, etc. We talked about the final service in the church and the plans for that day. We discussed the emotions around it. It was right around then that our friend said, “All will be well.” I smiled and commented that another parishioner had shared this same thought earlier in the week.

I then learned from where this phrase comes. Julian of Norwich was a medieval English Catholic anchoress. She wrote the Revelations of Divine Love, which is believed to be the first book written by a woman. She lived in the 1300’s, much in seclusion in her room attached to St. Julian’s Church, Norwich. In her writings, she shares that “God sees us as perfect and waits for the day when human souls mature so that evil and sin will no longer hinder us”Β and that “God is nearer to us than our own soul”. This theme is repeated throughout her work: “Jesus answered with these words, saying: ‘All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.’” What beautiful perspective to have, and one of such hope and faith.

I have a feeling that I’ll be keeping this in mind for the many months ahead. Actually, it’s a phrase that perhaps should become part of a daily prayer πŸ™‚ .

Jesus will make all things well in His time. Our charge while here is to do our best to live as He did, so when He returns, we hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Have a good day, friends. πŸ™‚

Romans 8:28
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
