One of my team members has been working on a project for us. As we are getting ready to take down and rebuild our church, we have been sharing much of the history of our little church on social media. It’s been interesting to learn all about how it began. The first service was actually held on the porch of a little hotel back in the 1950’s.
We’ve been going through all the old pictures and trying to place dates and names to the faces. We’ve read at least four different accounts of how the church was founded, up until the late 1980’s, each from a founding member. We read about the various priests, organists, and choir leaders who have come and gone over the years. We’ve learned about how our church helped start four, yes, four other churches in Naples.
As we’ve shared the history on social media, the reactions have been fun. Some people chime in saying they remember this picture or that person. Everyone is commenting on things they didn’t know and how learning them only makes them more connected to our church.
In the office, we are going through the process of carefully archiving all of this history. We’ve actually set up a “history room” to house the pictures, records, files, and such, filled with the past. It’s important information, and we want to preserve it for future generations.
This morning, as I thought about this process, I couldn’t help but think about preserving the Lord’s history. I thought about His word, the Bible. This book, this word of God, has lasted for thousands of years. It has taught generations, and it will teach future generations.
I’m also thinking about this weekend and the 250th birthday of this nation. Founded on the belief in God, with the Bible as the main resource in developing the documents that would shape this great country.
As we celebrate our 250th, let’s remember our history. First and foremost, our Father, who gave us the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Let us remember Jesus, who gave His life for us to be free from a life of sin and have everlasting life with Him. Let’s remember our founding fathers, who gave up everything to come to a new world in search of freedom.
We are blessed friends. Remember and honor the history, and give thanks to God for those who have come before.
Psalm 33:12
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
