Last night I sent a text to my older brothers. I found a meme on social media that just simply hit home. Actually, it was a picture of a T-shirt offered by a company called wooftees.com. The shirt has a cartoon picture of what appears to be a husky holding a cup of coffee and a cane. The caption says:
I’m so old…
I remember one bathroom for the whole family
A phone on the wall
No internet & a TV with rabbit ears & just 3 Channels
And we still made it!
Well, as I’m sure many of you can understand, I connected with that image and message. I absolutely remember all those things. I shared with my brothers that, at this point in my life, I look back on those times and realize those were some of the best memories of my childhood. Of course, I jokingly said to them in my text, “Even though Mom always made me get up from across the room to turn the channel.” Usually one of my brothers was sitting right next to the TV 🙂 .
This morning, as I thought about that message and those times, I thought about how Father always provides for us. He provides just what we need when we need it. We didn’t have much when I was growing up, but we had each other; we had a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, clothes on our backs, and we had the unconditional love of our parents. We had what we needed, and we all turned out pretty OK.
In these current times of the next best techy device and faster connection, it’s easy to get sucked into wanting more and more. What I’ve learned is that those techy things, those shiny new toys, well, often they fail. Cell service doesn’t work, wifi connection is down, an electronic transfer leads to a hack of some sort. Those techy things have actually created less communication and connectedness, not more.
Friends, I’m not here to bash technology; I know it has its place. I’m just dropping a little reminder that those simpler times, well, they were pretty good. We all had what we needed, and we made it. We all had what we needed, and we communicated. We laughed over silly TV shows; we talked when we had a meal instead of everyone scrolling on a phone. And yes…we fought over who needed the phone on the wall!
Take some time this weekend to remember those simpler times, and hey, maybe enjoy a meal this weekend with cell phones turned off. I think we’ll find that we’ll make it just fine.
Have a great day, friends. Continued prayers for the return of Emily Rea, and for Philip and his family.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
