I’ve always been an old soul. My mom dubbed me that a very long time ago. I’ve always loved being around seniors. They are special people; they have our history within them.

Last night we had one of our Summer Soirees with our parish family. It’s an opportunity to go to dinner in the off-season when the restaurants are a little, well, a lot less busy. We fill their seats, and they love to have the business.

We sat with some dear friends, all of whom are older, wiser, and amazing. We just love them all. As I sit this morning and think about the conversation, the joking, the laughter, and the sharing, I thank Father for the gift of our seniors. They are so very special.

Our seniors, they carry the memories. They carry the scars of keeping this nation going. They are tired, but you know what, they just keep going because, well, that is how they have always lived. They do what must be done.

Friends, we must honor our seniors. We must give respect to who they are, what they have lived through, what they have built for the next generation, us, our children, and our grandchildren.

We need to respect them, love them, and thank them because you know what…one day we will be them.

Father, thank you for the gift of your children, our older generation. Thank you for giving them the strength to overcome so many challenges in this world. Thank you for giving them the vision to see what must be done to carry us forward. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of so many willing to put it all on the line for this nation, for those whom they did not even know.

Friends, if you come across a senior today, one of God’s older and wiser children, give them grace, hold a door, share a smile, say thank you. Let them know they are respected and cherished for a life well lived.
