I guess you could say I’m a little Type A personality, especially when it comes to some things. I’ve mentioned here before that I have an ops brain, meaning I can look at a situation and quickly see solutions. I particularly like to plan events, as most of you know. There are a lot of moving parts, and I like the challenge of connecting the dots and watching it come together.

The building project at church is now tapping my Type A personality. I can’t tell you how many lists I have and how many times I’ve rewritten them. I see a long-range picture in my head, and it takes time to get a clear path to making it appear. At some point, you have to just start.

That’s what we did this week; we started. We emptied a major area in the church because its contents won’t be used again before we begin demolition. Fortunately, a parishioner donated dozens of sturdy tubs and matching lids. I made labels for each to be taped clearly on two sides of the tubs (yep, Type A kicking in).

I walked with my team to discuss various areas that will convert for storage, each requiring some “decluttering”. I gave my ideas for where things should go, and how I envisioned things would function once in those spaces. By the end of the day on Friday, we had made a pretty big dent in things.

There were times throughout the week when, admittedly, I found myself frustrated. Tasks weren’t completed in the way I would have completed them. Did I miscommunicate, did I not give clear direction, could I have explained things better? All the questions went through my mind.

Looking back this morning, I realize there are things I could have explained more thoroughly. I also think there were moments when others just “got it done”, rather than thinking of the longer-term picture.

Whatever project, task, or situation we are trying to complete or find ourselves in, I believe the Lord just asks that we do our best. If something is dirty, make it clean. If something is cluttered, make it tidy. Be respectful of the task at hand and be pleased with your work when it’s finished.

So, next week, we’ll continue through our lists, and I’ll take more care in explaining things thoroughly and present the longer-term picture. Then, when things maybe are quite so right, I’ll give a little guidance for making it better.
