In a Pickle

Ever have one of those days when you’re just in a bad mood? You wake up, and things are out of sorts. Maybe you didn’t sleep well, maybe the weather is crummy, maybe it’s a Monday, and you’re just dreading the day. Or maybe there really isn’t a reason, and you are just in a lousy mood, and you really don’t know why. Hmmm…could it be satan just noodling you?

Yesterday was one of those days for me. It was raining when I got up, but that was ok; really, it was. We need the rain badly. I just felt out of sorts. I putzed around doing odds and ends, trying to shake the feeling, but it hung around. My husband and I were trying to plan something and spent time online together trying to finalize things, and nothing would come together. Ugh, more of the same.

We did some errands, which helped a bit, but even with those, we had to make several stops because places didn’t have what we needed. By the time we got home, I was a little better but still just bleh. I needed to do something to get out of this funk.

I started a project for our canning group. If you’ve been reading this little blog for awhile you know that we have a Christmas market at church each November. Several parishioners come together each year to can jams, jellies, chutney, and other wonderful items. A dear friend, Polly, has always made her famous pickles for years. Unfortunately, she passed away unexpectedly earlier this year. We’ve found what we believe is her recipe for her famous pickles, and I purchased the ingredients to make a test batch. So, yesterday afternoon I set to work.

I began to chop and measure, and as I worked my way through the recipe, I found myself thinking about Polly. I remembered how she would, usually in August, start to bring jars, and more jars of finished delights, and store them in the long walk-in fridge. Her little corner of the fridge would keep filling until that weekend in November when, magically, there were dozens of canned jars ready to go. I thought about how she always had a smile, how she always had an ear to listen and solid advice when you needed it. She was a wonderful lady and had a heart that was full of love she shared with all she knew.

As I finished the recipe and gave the pickles their two hours to sit, I realized that my funk had lifted and I felt much better. Maybe it was the digging in and working on something, or maybe it was the remembrances of Polly, or maybe it was Father intervening to remind me of how blessed I am and there really isn’t a place for foul moods in my life 🙂 .

Friends, it’s so easy for satan to get into your thoughts, and before you know it, you’ve wasted a day with a bad mood. Instead of wandering around in a funk, it would have been a much better idea to just sit and spend a little time with the Lord. Time with Him is all that’s needed to lift the gloom and restore order and light.

Have a good day, everyone. Take some time to enjoy the many gifts of this life today, and give thanks to Father for those priceless gifts.

Psalm 118:24
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
