We have some neighbors who, about a year ago, moved back up north to be closer to their children. Don and Judy were a wonderful couple and introduced themselves to us within days of moving to our community.
We would chat each time we saw each other, getting the latest on Don’s pickleball game, Judy’s doctor’s appointments, etc. When we would all be sitting on our respective lanai’s, we’d wave or chat across the little courtyard. Since their condo faced east, usually every morning Judy would be out watching the sunrise. Don would bring her coffee and the paper, and she’d be there most of the morning.
Over time, Judy’s health made the walk up to their two-story condo more difficult. They made the decision to leave the place they called home for almost 30 years to have the support of their kids. They put their condo on the market, and it took a while for it to sell, but last week we were told it had done just that.
The other night as my husband and I sat on our lanai, we talked about Don and Judy. We missed them, and while I’m glad they were able to sell their place, it made me sad that someone else will be there now. As I stood up to go inside, I could see into their kitchen window, and there on the counter was the coffee pot. I smiled thinking about Don making coffee each morning, as I’m sure he still does.
We all know that things change over time. Friends move, neighbors change, coworkers take new jobs, etc. One thing remains, though: home is where the heart is. Actually, I think I’d change that familiar phrase to say, home is where our Lord is. No matter where we live or who our neighbors are, as long as we have the Lord in the center, we’ll always be home.
I keep Don and Judy in my prayers, and we’ll look forward to meeting new neighbors. Who knows, maybe they’ll sit on the lanai each morning with coffee and the paper to watch the sunrise.
Have a good day, friends. Continued prayers for the return of sweet Emily Rea.
John 14:23
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our home with him.”
