Yesterday, on the way to work, I noticed that our local police were out in large numbers. I counted four along my route. They were in all types of vehicles: their standard Explorer, the stealthy Mustang, and the pick-up truck. One had pulled over a driver, I presume for speeding, but I don’t know that for sure.
I’ve commented before about the drivers here in our little corner of paradise. Ya, to say it can be frustrating driving in our fair city, that might be an understatement. Yes, the speeding through town, no turn signals, and of course the ever-popular stop at a light two car lengths behind the car in front of you because you are texting and don’t want to roll into said car. Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox. I was glad to see our men and women in blue yesterday. I hoped their presence was making a difference in driver behavior.
Well….my hopes dimmed when I was following behind one of the police vehicles as we came to a busy intersection. We were all in the left lane to make the left turn. About three cars ahead of us, the light turned yellow. There went one car, two cars, three cars, and yep, you guessed it, the police car made the turn, not on the yellow, but fully on the red arrow 😦 . I think at that point I actually said out loud, “He just drove right through the red light!” He’s actually very lucky he wasn’t hit, because in this town, oncoming traffic usually just bolts when the light changes.
I love our men and women in blue. My brother was in law enforcement for a very long time. They all put their lives on the line every single day to protect our communities, and I’m extremely grateful for their service. My disappointment is that when those who are here to enforce our laws are not following them, we’re left with chaos. How can you hold people accountable for following rules and laws when those here to enforce them aren’t following the same rules and laws?
We are all human; we all make mistakes, like I make ’em multiple times a day. At the end of the day, though, we need to do our best to be an example, a positive example. Follow the rules, do the right thing, even when no one is looking.
When our time comes to meet Jesus, will He ask about the red light we ran on the way to work? I’m guessing not, but I believe He will ask what we did to make a difference while we were here. Sharing His love, being a positive example for others, lending a hand to those in need, I’m guessing that will be His focus.
So friends, be a positive example for others today. Let them see Jesus at work in you and through you. And yes…when the light turns yellow, resist the urge to speed up and go through it 🙂 .
Have a good day, everyone. Continued prayers for the return of sweet Emily Rea.
