As I’ve been sharing here over the past few months, we are in the midst of planning to take down and rebuild our church. We’ve been moving things around, discussing service layouts in our parish hall, and finding new ways to use the spaces to accommodate the various events that take place each day/week in our church.

As I’ve been cleaning out cabinets and moving items here and there, I’ve found a few times that I’m kind of like a deer in the headlights. I look at a shelf of items and don’t even know where to start. I will say that this project has prompted us to do some major “house cleaning”.

Yesterday was one of those days where I wasn’t sure where to start. Well, what I’ve learned is just start. As I stared at a cabinet full of items, I began to pull things out one at a time. It wasn’t long before piles started to form on the floor. If you’ve ever moved, cleaned out closets, or just done spring cleaning, you know the drill: this pile is garbage, this one gets donated, these items are keepers, etc. By the end of the day, the cabinet was unloaded, items taken to the garbage or to our Church Mouse store, and the remainder taken to their new storage space.

This morning, as I thought about that exercise of cleaning out the cabinet, I thought about how it’s similar to life. Some days things seem so overwhelming we don’t know where to start. We can face challenges that have us frozen. An illness, the loss of a job, a natural disaster that destroys our home, or losing a friend or loved one are challenges we might be going through that have us frozen and not knowing where to start.

Whatever the challenge, we have to start somewhere, and the best place is to start with Father. Drop the “I don’t know how to do this” at His feet. Share your fears, concerns, anxiousness, or whatever emotions you have with Him. Ask Him to guide your path and show you the first step. Then, put one foot in front of the other and begin the journey with Him.

I know that life has its challenges. The Lord didn’t promise easy; in fact, He told us we would face difficulties. What He did promise is that he would always be with us. He knows what we face; He has been where we are. So, let Him lift the weight from your shoulders, and start a new day.
