What is prayer to you? This morning, as I prayed my usual petitions, I thought about what the Lord wants from me when I pray. Yes, I ask for forgiveness; I ask for healing and protection of family and friends. I ask for the return of sweet Emily Rea. Is that enough? I wondered this morning.
I wasn’t quite sure how to share my thoughts on this message this morning. I think I’ve shared before that sometimes I feel like I’m checking the boxes when I pray. Making sure I have those in need at the top of the list, then praying for forgiveness, and so on. What’s missing is the conversation, the true opening up and sharing all things with Him.
For a while, I was talking with Jesus on my morning walks. I would discuss what I had on my plate for the day, and I would ask Him to be with me to help me through certain projects or tasks. I’d share my excitement about the day, or I’d ask for guidance through uncertainty. I talked with Him as a loving friend. I’ve fallen away from that kind of prayer, and I feel it.
Maybe it’s because there are many things going on right now, and I feel I need to make sure I pray for specific healing, specific strength. In doing so, I’m missing the bigger picture. He already knows what I’m going through. He already knows what I need and those I’m praying for; He knows their needs too. What He wants is a loving relationship with us. He wants to be more than just a few moments each morning and evening.
This morning, as I take my walk, I think I’ll leave my earbuds at home. Instead of listening to music, I’ll have a meaningful, heartfelt conversation with our Lord, sharing it all with Him. I’ll let Him fill me with His grace and prepare me for the day and whatever may arise.
Friends, what is prayer to you? Take a moment this morning to reflect on your prayer life. Are you just checking the boxes each morning and evening, or are you in a full-on loving relationship with the Lord? Do you talk with Him as you would your best friend? Today is a good day to start 🙂 .
Thank you, friends, for listening to some disjointed ramblings this morning. Have a good day, and continued prayers for Bill, Lorrie, and Diggy.
John 1:14
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
