Taking Care

Yesterday, they removed the bells from the church bell tower. It was a fascinating process to watch. The heaviest bell weighs 900 pounds and took quite some time to maneuver out.

I promise, I’m not going to give a daily account of the demo and reconstruction of our little church. I wanted to share some thoughts this morning, though, because yesterday I realized something. Yesterday I learned more about the character of the workers on this project. In speaking with them and watching their work yesterday, I came to understand that they too did not think of this as another job.

The men who removed the bells from the tower, I learned, were the very same men who put them in eight years ago. They were carefully placed on specially made pallets and wrapped to be protected from the weather until they are moved to storage later today.

The foreman of our general contractor, named “Buddy,” is onsite all day, coordinating the activities. We’ve had many conversations this week to understand the timeline of what will be happening each day. Buddy’s calm and gentle personality makes things a little less stressful. Yesterday we discussed the removal of the cornerstone. He talked about having one of his men begin the work on this task, as he will have to cut it out by hand. He stressed how careful they would be to make sure it was intact.

We discussed the removal of the bronze burial plaques from the walls near the churchyards. These plaques carry the names and information of everyone buried in the churchyards. They will be carefully removed and placed on the walls in a courtyard across the street.

Each conversation, each task, is approached with care. Everyone I’ve talked to, everyone I’ve seen working, is focused on taking special care as this building is taken down. You can see that to them it is not just another demolition. I think that is the Holy Spirit at work. Maybe through this job, someone who doesn’t already know Christ might come to know Him personally.

As I said, friends, I won’t bore you with a daily recount of activities; I just wanted to share that I felt Jesus at work yesterday. I know He is with us every day, but yesterday, He was truly at work.

Have a good day, friends. Please continue to lift your prayers for Bill and Lorrie, and for the granddog Diggy.
