Today is an anniversary. It was one year ago that my brother-in-law Mac walked into the arms of Jesus. It doesn’t seem like it should be a year already. It feels like just yesterday.
We’re going to do a few special things today as we remember him. My husband wants to drive his Mustang, which he doesn’t do often enough, especially during the rainy season in FL. His brother Mac actually drove this car first. When my husband found it at the dealership, he told his brother about it. The next thing I knew, the two of them were there, and my husband asked Mac to drive it first and tell him what he thought. The rest, so they say, is history.
Later this afternoon we’ll toast Mac with the family drink. We’ll gather virtually and not only toast Mac, but give thanks to Jesus for a life well lived. We’ll give thanks for the time we had with him in this world, and we’ll give thanks for the eternal life we’ll spend with him one day.
Yesterday I helped at the funeral of a friend. During the service, our priest said familiar words that reminded all of us that we’ll be together again. “Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who rose victorious from the dead, and comforts us with the blessed hope of everlasting life. For to your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens.”
Life is changed, not ended. Though we aren’t with Mac or other loved ones who have gone before, right now, we will be again. And…when we are reunited with them, it will be for eternity.
Love you, Mac. Today, we celebrate you.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
