This Sunday is All Saints’ Day. It’s what we call one of the major feast days of our church. We encourage those who wish to be baptized to do so on one of these days. We believe that being baptized on one of these days, like All Saints’ Day, unites the newly baptized directly into the communion of saints and the wider family of God. Baptism is not just an individual religious rite; it is an initiation into the entire Christian community-past, present, and future. Celebrating it on All Saints’ Day surrounds the one being baptized with the witness of all faithful believers who have gone before. This Sunday we are baptizing not one, not two, not three, but four little ones 🙂 . I started to wonder if I missed a memo about a special on baptisms this weekend 🙂 . But seriously, I love talking with parents as they plan this special event for their children.
Today, I’m meeting with a young woman and her dad. She is getting married in May. She was raised in our church and is back in town this week to meet with her wedding planner and to see the sanctuary now that it is in the parish hall. She moved away after college and hasn’t seen the church since we moved to the parish hall last month. I’ll walk her around; she’ll meet with clergy and understand that her wedding day will be just beautiful.
Last month I helped one of our parishioners, a dear friend, make the final arrangements for her husband’s funeral. She did a beautiful job of planning his service; I helped her with a slideshow and the reception. It was truly a lovely service and was a testimony to the love they shared.
In my position, I’m blessed to help people during the happiest and most difficult times in their lives. I’m not totally sure why the Lord brought me to where I am in this role; I just know that I’m glad to be where I am. There is something special about being there for others, to lend a hand, lend an ear, or lend a shoulder for strength.
Friends, you don’t have to be the administrator at a church to be in a position to help others. We can all be there for one another, to celebrate the special moments, and to support through the difficult times. Being there for one another, that’s what this life is about. Love God, and love thy neighbor.
Today, take a look around. I bet you can be there for someone to make the day just a little better. Go ahead, friends, make a difference.
2 Timothy 3:17
That the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
